Legal Services For Students Offering Tax Filing Assistance

Legal Services for Students, an office at the University of Kansas that offers legal assistance, advice and education to students on wide variety of issues, will offer free tax filing assistance this spring through a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance grant from the Internal Revenue Service.

The program is an additional resource to the VITA clinic previously announced by the School of Law.

U.S. resident taxpayers who earned less than $73,000 in 2022 can prepare and file their returns electronically for free with software provided online by LSS. International students, faculty and staff at KU can file their taxes for free with LSS assistance with no income limit. For more information about tax programs provided by LSS, visit the LSS website or email legals@ku.edu.

“We know tax filing can feel complicated and even overwhelming for taxpayers,” said Jo Hardesty, director of Legal Services for Students. “That’s why at LSS our goal is not only to help taxpayers get their returns filed but to educate taxpayers about the tax system and the process of tax filing. We want to demystify the process, and for the taxpayers we work with to feel confident approaching their tax return the next year, and every year going forward.”

LSS also provides free tax workshops for anyone needing assistance. Sessions will take place weekdays until Tax Day on April 18, except for spring break. The workshop schedule can be found at legalservices.ku.edu/tax-filing-workshops.
