Women Show Improvement But Fall to No. 18 Barton
Women's basketball's 18th-ranked Barton Community College pulled away from the Colby Trojans late in the second quarter and went on for an 89-47 win Wednesday night at the Colby Event Center.
Barton raced out to a 12-2 advantage before the Trojans rolled off seven straight points to get back into the game. The Cougars held the lead 21-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Cougars point guard Acorionna Lard sparked Barton early in the second period, and Jenny Womsi was a force on the inside.
Leading 25-20 in the second period, Barton clamped down defensively and held Colby scoreless for the next four minutes in the middle of a 12-0 run that aided a 44-26 lead entering the break.
Colby came out after halftime and tried to make a push, but Barton's defense continued to get stops and score at the other end. The Cougars shot 56% from the floor and committed just 12 turnovers for the game.
Despite the loss, the Trojans showed improvement, shooting 42% in the fourth quarter and making 80% (8-10) of their free throws. They also had a season-low 17 turnovers.
Jayla Sample led Colby with 14 points and five rebounds. Peyton Pinkney chipped in 11 points and six rebounds. Aaliyah Chambers added nine points and Carla Felix finished with eight.
For Barton, Womsi finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds, Lili Shubert posted 14 points, and Lard dished out eight assists.
After a road game at Cloud County on Saturday, the Trojans return to the Colby Event Center at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 18 to host Butler Community College.
