Serving as an example to others, Arnau Sagrera Barnet named September Student of the Month

Coming to America from Spain was a bit of a transition for Arnau Sagrera Barnet. After nearly two years as a student at Cowley College, it is safe to say the change has been a successful one, as Arnau was named the September Student of the Month.

Arnau’s parents are Anna Maria Barnet and Albert Sagrera. He has two older brothers, Ruben Barnet, 31, and Daniel Barnet, 28. Arnau had long dreamed of coming to the United States and chose to come to Arkansas City, KS, to attend Cowley College on a track and field scholarship after choosing them over another college in Seattle.

As a member of the track team, he competes in the 200 and 400-meter dash and the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays.

Along with track, he is a member of the Media Club, Phi Theta Kappa, and is the social media ambassador of the College. Through his work with Phi Theta Kappa, he was named a Coca-Cola Global Leaders of Promise Scholar.

“At the beginning, I was a little scared of coming to the Midwest,” Arnau said. “But, in my second semester at Cowley, I got involved with several clubs and the marketing department. Since then, I have fallen in love with Cowley. I have made amazing relationships.”

Marketing Director Abby Morris credits Arnau with improving the Marketing Department’s effectiveness and morale.

“Arnau is one of the most amazing students I have ever met in both spirit and talent,” Morris said. “He is helpful, positive, and encouraging in all groups and teams he serves. He brings with him a large amount of gratitude that Cowley College has given him from his home country of Spain, which serves as a reminder to all that he is around that there is much to be grateful for.”

Arnau enjoys the opportunity to utilize his talented videography skills and help assist in the branding of Cowley College.

“I am so glad to work with the amazing marketing team at Cowley College and get to do what I love and hope to do in the future,” Arnau said. “Film has always been my passion.”

The mass communications major has a 4.0-grade point average. In his free time, he enjoys hanging out with friends or playing tennis with his girlfriend, Camila Neyra.

Once he completes his college education, Arnau would like to become a film director. For now, he will enjoy being the first fall semester recipient of the Cowley College Student of the Month Award.

“This award means a lot to me,” Arnau said. “This is a huge honor; I never even thought I would be nominated. I am so glad to be at Cowley. This is like a dream.”
