Rep. Derek Schmidt, a Republican from Kansas, met with small business owners in Topeka this week to discuss legislative issues affecting their operations. Among the attendees was Patti Mellard, a member of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and a local business owner.

The discussion centered on the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which includes provisions aimed at supporting small businesses in Kansas. A key topic was the permanence of the Small Business Deduction, a measure that has implications for financial planning and stability for local entrepreneurs.

Attendees were able to engage directly with Rep. Schmidt, asking questions and sharing their experiences as small business operators.

“We thank Rep. Schmidt for taking the time to meet with our members and answer their questions,” said NFIB State Director Dan Murray. “Making the Small Business Deduction permanent has delivered real certainty to small business owners here in Kansas and across the country.”
