The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has announced the recipients of the 2025-2026 Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Planning and Programming grants. Six Kansas communities—Alta Vista, Douglass, Fort Scott, Grainfield, La Crosse, and Leavenworth—will receive funding to develop SRTS plans. The planning work is set to begin in August with final plans expected by May 2026.
These plans will involve analyzing current conditions, gathering public input, and proposing both infrastructure and non-infrastructure solutions aimed at ensuring safer routes for children walking, biking, or rolling to school. Communities that complete these plans can then apply for construction and programming implementation grants through KDOT's Transportation Alternatives Program.
This marks the third round of planning grants distributed by KDOT. The next application period for SRTS grants is scheduled for April 2026. Additional details are available on their website at saferoutes.ksdot.gov/grants-and-funding.
Previously awarded P&P grants for the 2024-25 cycle have been completed in five communities: Wallace County, Riverton, Sedan, Silver Lake, and Wellsville. Information about these plans can be accessed at saferoutes.ksdot.gov/about-the-program.
Safe Routes to School aims to increase the number of children who bike, roll, or walk safely to school. More information is available on KDOT's Safe Routes to School website where interested parties can also subscribe to a quarterly e-newsletter.
