The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and various industry leaders in Kansas have communicated with Governor Laura Kelly, urging her to collaborate with the legislature in implementing broad property tax relief. The request comes amid budget surpluses in the state.
In their written appeal, the group expressed their belief that comprehensive property tax relief, along with other measures, would be supported across the political spectrum. Specifically, they suggested eliminating income tax on Social Security income, accelerating the removal of sales tax on food, and aligning the privilege tax with other corporate taxes.
The leaders wrote: “We believe this broad-based property tax relief coupled with consensus provisions such as eliminating income tax on Social Security income, accelerating the elimination of sales tax on food purchases, and syncing the privilege tax with other corporate taxes would enjoy strong, bipartisan support among legislators. Under this approach, money would remain available for you and the legislature to pursue income tax relief, whether that occurs during the special session or next session.”
