Olathe Northwest Girls Golf Team Takes State Title
Olathe Northwest High School won the 6A state championship in girls golf on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at Salina Municipal Golf Course in Salina, Kan.
“I am very proud to have coached the 2022 Olathe Northwest Women’s State Championship golf team,” Coach Michael Grove said. “They represented their families, themselves, school and community at the highest level.”
The team won against Shawnee Mission East High School by 19 strokes. Olathe Northwest also had four individual medalists who placed in the top 20. Congratulations to sophomore Avery Hearshman for placing second, sophomore Claire Sullivan for nabbing seventh, junior McKenzie Kelso for taking 14th and junior Julia Beveridge for placing 18th.
Olathe High Schools Dominate the State Championship
The Olathe North High School gymnastics team took first place in the state championship for the second year in a row, with Olathe West High School placing second — earning back-to-back runner-up titles. Olathe East High School placed fifth and Olathe Northwest High School placed ninth.
Olathe Northwest sophomore Emmy Keller earned first place in the all-around and vault and third on both bar and beam events. Olathe West senior Alexis Purdy placed first on beam, second on floor and bar, and tied for second place in the all-around.
There were several other Olathe gymnasts who placed in the top five of their events at the state championship that took place at Olathe South High School. All gymnastics teams practice together and are coached by Sports Medicine & Exercise Science teacher Amanda Harrington.
Olathe West Wins State in Girls’ Cross-Country
At the 6A state championship in Lawrence, Kan., Olathe West High School girls' cross-country team took first place. This is their third year in a row to be named state champions.
“We are so proud of our girls for winning three straight state championships,” Olathe West cross-country coach Kelsey Carbajo said. “Cross-country can often be looked at as an individual sport, but the girls see it as a team sport. It takes hard work and toughness to run cross-country, and these girls have proven to be some of the toughest girls in the state! This group is special and has set the standard for Olathe West Cross-Country.”
Olathe North High School junior Anjali Hocker Singh won first place individually. This is also her third year to place first in the state competition. Other top five individual medalists include Olathe West senior Charis Robinson who placed third in the girls’ competition and Olathe East High School senior Carter Stewart who placed fourth in the boys’ competition.
