Wichita State defeated Tulsa, 4-0, on Apr. 18 in the semifinals of the American Conference Championship at the George R. Brown Tennis Center in Houston.
The victory marks Wichita State’s first appearance in an American Championship final in program history. The team, seeded first, improved its record to 21-3 after defeating fourth-seeded Tulsa for the second time within a week.
In doubles play, Wichita State secured wins on all three courts and claimed the doubles point with near-simultaneous victories at No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Kristina Kudryavtseva and Theodora Chantava won their match at No. 2 by a score of 6-3, while Xin Tong Wang and Giorgia Roselli triumphed at No. 1 with a decisive 6-1 result.
The Shockers maintained control during singles competition as well, winning five out of six first sets against Tulsa opponents. Chantava avenged an earlier loss to her Tulsa counterpart by winning her singles match at No. 3 with scores of 6-1 and 6-2, giving Wichita State a two-point lead.
Roselli extended the advantage with a straight-set win (6-3, 6-4) at No. 2 singles before Wang clinched the overall victory for Wichita State by securing a win (6-1, 6-4) at No. 1 singles.
Looking ahead, Wichita State will face host Rice University—the tournament’s third seed—on Sunday at noon for the championship match held again at George R. Brown Tennis Center and broadcast on ESPN+. The winner will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
