Amazon received $22 million in subsidies, tax breaks, and grants from Kansas communities for two projects.
Advocacy group Good Jobs First, which opposes such subsidies, found Kansas provided the 28th-highest amount of grants and breaks among U.S. states to the nearly $1-trillion company.
Kansas is ranked behind Iowa (2 projects/$22 million) and ahead of Colorado (9 projects/$16 million), Oklahoma (5 projects/$11 million), and Utah (3 projects/$10 million).
The most expensive subsidy provided in Kansas was by the Kansas City government, which offered $20 million to Amazon in a 10-year property tax and sales tax abatement, as well as tax exemptions on building materials.
The other subsidy was worth $2 million from the state for a project in Edgerton.
Kansas is often in conflict with neighboring Missouri over jobs and subsidies, which companies use to their advantage.
An audit found that the largest subsidy program couldn't justify its nearly $1 billion cost.
As of Nov. 17, 2022, Amazon had received 310 separate tax break deals from local and state governments across the U.S., totaling $5.14 billion. The state of Virginia was home to the largest portion of these taxpayer-subsidized Amazon projects.
