National Suicide Prevention Line transitions to 988 on July 16

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline launches its new 988 dialing code on Saturday, July 16 as it continues to help those experiencing a mental health crisis.

The lifeline will transition from 1-800-573-TALK to this new three-digit code, an easy-to-remember number that will make interventions and resources more accessible for individuals in mental health or substance abuse crisis.

When you call 988, your call will be routed to the existing Lifeline network, now known as the 988 Suicide and Crisis Hotline. The Lifeline network has over 200 local crisis centers across the United States. This includes Johnson County Mental Health Center, which joined the network in 2021.

When you call 988 and connect with a local call center, trained mental health professionals are available 24/7 to provide support, listen and provide guidance on next steps to keep yourself and others safe. If on-site support is needed, they may activate mobile crisis responders or 911 first responders.

Calls to 988 will be directed to a local call center based on your area code. JCMHC receives 988 calls from Johnson County phone numbers. Kansas has two additional 988 call centers: ComCare in Wichita and Kansas Suicide Prevention HQ in Lawrence.

JCMHC has seen a significant increase in crisis calls and contacts over the past several years, especially during the pandemic. It anticipates numbers will continue to increase, and recently added four full-time Crisis Call Specialists to help with 988 call response.

JCMHC’s 24/7 crisis line, 913-268-0156, will continue to be available day or night for those in need of mental health care.
