Donald Trump endorsed Republican Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) for reelection despite the latter criticizing the former president for his baseless claims of election fraud during the 2020 U.S. presidential election.
Trump praised the senator from Kansas for doing a “terrific job” for his constituents. Trump said that Moran was highly supportive of the military, especially the veterans. He also praised Moran for being a staunch supporter of tightening border security and for supporting the Second Amendment.
Moran supported Trump as well when he voted to acquit the former president during the latter’s second impeachment trial. Moran’s decision to acquit Trump was basically a technical one: he said that the use of impeachment proceedings is to remove a president from office but since Trump was no longer a president it would have been illogical to use impeachment on him. Therefore, Moran decided to acquit Trump.
Moran condemned the Jan. 6 riots in the Capitol though and said that it was also wrong for Trump to continue claiming election fraud when it was clearly debunked. He also criticized Trump for not discouraging the rioters from storming the Capitol.
