Kansas’ National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has expressed approval for the Senate’s passage of Senate Bill 54, which aims to increase transparency in third-party litigation financing. Dan Murray, State Director of NFIB, emphasized the bill as a significant concern for small and family-owned businesses in Kansas.

Murray stated, “Unlike their big box competitors, our small business owners do not have an army of attorneys at their disposal to fight every lawsuit that may come their way. Unfortunately, trial attorneys looking for a quick payout know this, and Main Street becomes an easy target for predatory litigation.” He added that most NFIB members in Kansas want this issue addressed. “Senate Bill 54 will ensure greater transparency in Kansas’ legal landscape by requiring the disclosure of third parties with a financial interest in litigation. We thank the Senate for standing up for a fairer, more transparent legal landscape here in Kansas, and urge the House to do the same.”

The call for increased transparency is supported by NFIB’s annual survey findings indicating that 86% of participating Kansas members believe such disclosures should be mandated.
