The Kansas Legislature is currently evaluating several bills aimed at providing tax relief for residents. Dan Murray, the State Director of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), testified in support of these measures on behalf of small business owners. He emphasized the importance of aligning Kansas’ tax code with neighboring states to foster economic growth.
“We urge the legislature and the Governor to send hard-earned taxpayer dollars back to Main Street, where small business owners can reinvest in their employees and businesses,” Murray stated.
Among the proposals NFIB supports are:
– SB 195, which seeks to establish a property tax task force to study and recommend improvements to Kansas’ property tax system.
– SB 280, which mandates voter approval for any taxing entity’s decision to increase its total property tax levy beyond inflation rates.
– SB 259 and HB 2318, both proposing automatic income tax rate reductions triggered by revenue collections exceeding baseline amounts adjusted for inflation.
– HB 2396, which introduces a protest petition process enabling voters to contest significant property tax hikes.
Property tax relief has been identified as a top priority by NFIB Kansas members, with over eighty-eight percent advocating for a reduction in the statewide property tax mill levy.
