Where did the phrase ‘a dog is a man’s best friend’ come from? It is claimed that the first time the phrase ‘man’s best friend’ was used, was in 1789 by King Frederick of Prussia. These days, whenever you think of dogs, this saying comes to mind, and it brings a feeling of great affection – especially to those who have loved a dog. When you ask any owner about why they love dogs so much, it’s highly likely they will mention the fact that dogs are so loyal. They are always there for us, and many will do absolutely anything for their owner, even try to save them or get help in an emergency.

And with that segue- (DRUM ROLL) – the Great Bend Police Department is proud to introduce K9 Niko, the newest addition to our agency! Niko is a 17-month-old Belgian Malinois. This breed is often mistaken for German Shepherds, with whom they share the same herding traits as well as similar color patterns, however, Belgian Malinois tend to weigh less and are built for running and agility, and they tend to be less prone to some health conditions that are present with German Shepherds. K9 Niko will be partnered with Officer Matthew Barker. K9 Niko was purchased from a trainer in Nacogdoches, Texas, where Officer Barker also received his training. Officer Barker and K9 Niko have already bonded together quite well and are now patrolling our community.
