A Kansas tax preparer has been sentenced to 36 months in prison for filing false income tax returns, resulting in a tax loss exceeding $1.5 million to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Court documents reveal that Hophine Bwosinde, 61, from Lenexa, admitted guilt to one count of aiding and assisting in fraud and false statements.
Between 2018 and 2022, Bwosinde used his tax preparation business to submit fraudulent tax returns for clients. He inflated legitimate business expenses or claimed losses from fictitious businesses. Additionally, he falsely reported negative income on clients’ returns. This led to significant underreporting of their incomes to the IRS, either reducing taxes owed or providing refunds not entitled.
The case was investigated by IRS Criminal Investigation.
Former Trial Attorney Erika V. Suhr of the Tax Division and Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Huschka for the District of Kansas handled the prosecution.
