The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), a prominent advocate for small businesses in Kansas, has expressed its strong support for House Bill 2089. This proposed legislation aims to exclude sales tax and tips from the swipe fees imposed by credit card networks.
Dan Murray, NFIB State Director, emphasized the challenges faced by small business owners due to inflation and rising credit card processing fees. “Inflation is pushing small business owners and their thin margins to the brink,” he stated. Murray highlighted that these fees, which range between 1.5% and 3.5% per transaction, add financial strain on Main Street businesses, making it difficult for them to expand operations, increase wages, or maintain competitive costs.
Murray further argued against credit card companies profiting from merchants who collect taxes or workers’ tips in Kansas. He noted that HB 2089 would alleviate the burden on small businesses, their employees, and consumers by reducing excessive swipe fees.
